Glover: 'very excited' to be hosting the new show

Fi Glover is to succeed the late John Peel as BBC Radio 4's voice of Saturday mornings.

Glover, presenter of the station's Sunday morning news and current affairs show Broadcasting House, is to take over the Saturday morning slot occupied previously by Peel's Home Truths, MediaGuardian.co.uk can reveal.

Glover will return from maternity leave in September to host a new one-hour show in the 9am to 10am slot, following Saturday morning's Today programme.

Two pilots of the show have already been made and several more will be produced before the show goes live next month.

Glover is "very excited" to be coming back to Radio 4 to front the show, said her agent, Vivienne Clore.

The move may also please the station's fans, many of whom were upset by the decision by the Radio 4 controller, Mark Damazer, to axe Home Truths.

The show continued after Peel's untimely death in October 2004 using a roster of presenters.

Mr Damazer said of his decision last December to ditch Home Truths that it had proved impossible to replace the much-loved Peel and his wry look at family life, and that it made more sense to look for a new programme to fill the slot.

"John's unique personality was bound up with Home Truths and now it's time to look for a different programme," said Mr Damazer at the time.

The new programme will replace the two half-hour shows that currently occupy the 9am-10am slot in the schedule - Gyles Brandreth's Sound Advice and Arthur Smith's Sentimental Journey.

Matthew Bannister and Paddy O'Connell have been standing in as presenters of Broadcasting House during Glover's maternity leave. It is unclear who will be offered the job on a permanent basis.

Glover joined Radio 4 in 2004 to take over Broadcasting House from Eddie Mair.

She had spent the previous six months on sabbatical in the US.

Before that she worked on BBC Radio 5 Live for five years following stints on various local radio stations including Radio Northampton and GLR.
