Of Montreal

Steve Klinge
Philadelphia Inquirer
Published: Friday, February 24, 2006

Along with Elf Power, Of Montreal is one of the last standard-bearers of the Elephant 6 ethos, the alchemical approach to Beach Boys/Beatles/Big Star pop that blossomed in Athens, Ga., a decade ago.

Kevin Barnes' Of Montreal started off as the most childish of the loose aggregate of bands that included Neutral Milk Hotel and Apples in Stereo, but on last year's The Sunlandic Twins, one song declares "I Was Never Young," and the album backs it up with psychedelic confections like the funky new wave gem "Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games" and the fuzzy guitar blast "Forecast Fascist Future."

Of Montreal tops an excellent triple bill with the like-minded The M's, whose new CD, Future Women, bristles with prickly power-pop. Philly's own blissed-out Lilys finish the bill.

Of Montreal performs with Lilys and the M's.
