Rell acted following fires in underground utility vaults caused significant power outages in Stamford and Meriden during the past week’s heat wave. Westport also suffered scattered power outages during the hot weather.

The governor asked the Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control (DPUC) to examine the age and condition of Connecticut’s utility infrastructure.

She also requested documents from Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating that outline contingency plans for dealing with similar breakdowns in the future.

“We have several weeks more of hot summer weather and we know that heat waves and thunderstorms put our power facilities under tremendous strain,” Rell said in a statement.

“Not every problem can be prevented. However, we must be certain that a more-than-adequate plan is in place for ongoing preventive measures, upkeep and maintenance. This work must be done regularly and done well.”

Rell asked that the DPUC begin its review as quickly as possible and to report its findings to her by Sept. 15.

Meanwhile, Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, the endorsed Democratic candidate for governor, visited Meriden today where another power outage occurred. He criticized Rell for what he said was her lack of leadership in tackling the state’s energy crisis.

He pledged to implement a statewide action plan to address Connecticut’s long-term energy needs.

“The recent power outages, including this one today, are another reminder of the crippling energy issues confronting Connecticut residents, businesses, and transportation networks,” said Malloy.

“As governor, I will take immediate and decisive action to enact a comprehensive energy plan similar to the successful program I initiated as mayor of Stamford.”
