Ex-police chief charged

ELWOOD — Former Police Chief Jerry Harrold was recently arrested and charged with domestic battery by Kankakee County police.

According to police reports, Harrold, 51, choked his girlfriend with his hands and struck her in the head with a telephone during a dispute Feb. 23 at the couple's home at 205 Burr Ridge Road in Essex.

Harrold served as Elwood's top cop from 2000 to 2003, when current police Chief Dave Albert took on the job.

Harrold told The Herald News at the time that he preferred working as a street cop. He remained with the department as a sergeant and was in charge of training new police officers.

He has not been employed by the Elwood Police Department for nearly a year. Village officials declined to comment on the matter due to pending litigation.

Harrold was released on bond pending a March 22 court date in Kankakee County.
