Wasn't that a party?
By LARISSA LIEPINS
Today staff Monday July 31, 2006 Fort McMurray Today Attendees at Fort McMurray’s first-ever “Rock Island” had three things to say about the two-day rock concert that saw more than 2,000 pay $73 apiece to watch a total of eight bands: The Trews and the Sam Roberts Band rocked, the sound was awesome, and the lineups to buy beer on Friday night were too long.
“I’m having an awesome time, but the lineups were bad and they ran out of Coors Lite,” said construction worker Norm Power, 24, on Friday night.
Adit Prasard, 23, who was in town from Victoria, said MacIsland made for a “very nice setting,” and “The Trews put on a pretty good show.”
Apart from a short fight on Friday night, RCMP reported the event “free of any major incidents,” according to a press release this morning.
Frustrations were noticeably lower inside the beer tent on Saturday night, where imbibers sheltered from the rain and double the number of servers were on hand to keep the taps flowing.
“We actually called the radio station and said we’re not coming back if we have to wait 40 minutes for a beer, like we did last night,” said geologist Jennifer Dorington, 25.
While drinkers were free to roam on Friday, by Saturday, a barricade separated them from other concertgoers because the Alberta Liquor Control Board “had concerns about it (on Friday),” said one of the event’s promoters, who refused to give his name.
But 25-year-old power engineer Bruce Knoydart was forgiving of the minor glitches. ”They were unprepared because they were inexperienced,” he said.
While fans braved the rain that fell just as Sam Roberts hit the stage for a long and energetic set, Roberts complained several times about the bugs.
“I must have killed about 10 big ones during that last song,” he joked.
“Tonight it’s much better,” said Ryan Marchand, 26. “The lineups were shorter and Sam Roberts rocked.”
