Rooney makes his peace with Ronaldo

LONDON (AFP) - Wayne Rooney says he's buried the hatchet with his Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo after falling out with the Portugal winger at the World Cup.

Rooney was incensed at Ronaldo's provocative behaviour in the controversial quarter-final between England and Portugal.

Ronaldo was seen shoving his head into Rooney's before the last eight match and encouraging referee Horacio Elizondo to red card the England firebrand after he had stamped on Ricardo Carvalho.

Rooney lost his temper and shoved Ronaldo who did not help the situation by running over and winking conspiratorially at the Portugal bench in a game the Portuguese won on penalties.

"It's fine now. I spoke to him on the night after the game," Rooney told Sky Sports news on Thursday.

"I'm not going to lie, I was disappointed with the way he ran over to the referee.

"But at the end of the day we weren't team-mates that day. We were rivals. I wanted to win, he wanted to win for his country so we have to get on with it and hopefully do well for Manchester United together."

The striker said he felt for Ronaldo who missed out being named FIFA's best young player in Germany because of the bad press he received after the incident.

"I think he should have won the young player award at the World Cup but because of the criticism he got it was taken away from him," said Rooney.

"I was disappointed for him, I think everyone at the club was disappointed for him. He had a good tournament and I don't think he should have had it taken away for him because of that."

Rooney used the interview to reaffirm his intention to see out his career at Old Trafford.

"I'm perfectly happy here and looking to sign a new contract. I want to stay at the club, I am happy at the club so there's no reason not to stay."
