Line Drive Knocks Angels' Santana From Game

Friday, August 11, 2006; Page E06

Angels starter Ervin Santana was helped from the field by team trainers last night after being hit on the left leg by a line drive.

With one out in the first inning, the Indians' Jason Michaels lined a 1-0 pitch back through the middle that hit Santana on the inside of his left leg, above the shin and near the knee.

Tests at Lutheran Medical Center in Cleveland revealed no break and Santana was listed as day-to-day with a bruise.

Santana rolled on the ground in pain as Michaels made it to first base safely with a single. Manager Mike Scioscia , Los Angeles infielders and team trainers then crowded around the right-hander.

After a few minutes, Santana walked to the dugout with assistance. He was replaced by RHP Kevin Gregg .

· SECOND MRI FOR LIRIANO: The Twins are optimistic, but not totally confident, that injured LHP Francisco Liriano will return this season.

Liriano, 12-3 with a league-leading 2.19 ERA, had a second, enhanced MRI exam when a shot of dye was injected into his arm for a better reading.

The test showed a mild chronic strain of his ulnar collateral ligament, and a clinical exam revealed weakness and stiffness in his shoulder that is causing soreness in his forearm near his elbow.

Meantime, RHP Matt Garza will make his major league debut tonight against Toronto. It's the latest stop on a speedy professional journey that began last summer when the Twins drafted him in the first round from Fresno State.

· GUILLEN EJECTED: White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen was ejected after arguing a play at first base in the sixth inning against the Yankees.

· PAVANO PITCHES: Yankees RHP Carl Pavano threw 2 2/3 innings in his first minor league rehabilitation start since surgery in May for a bone chip above his right elbow.

Pitching for Class A Tampa against the Daytona Cubs, Pavano allowed three runs and five hits, walked one batter intentionally and struck out one.
