CLEVELAND -- Los Angeles Angels pitcher Ervin Santana was hit in the left leg by a line drive and left Thursday night's game against Cleveland after only five pitches.
Tests at Lutheran Medical Center revealed no break and Santana was listed as day-to-day with a bruise. Santana was struck by Jason Michaels' liner and took the loss in a 14-2 defeat.
"It was very bad, I thought it was broken or something," said Santana, hit on the inside of his knee.
After the game, the Angels recalled right-hander Chris Bootcheck from Salt Lake City and optioned outfielder Tommy Murphy to their Triple-A affiliate. Manager Mike Scioscia said right-hander Dustin Moseley could be recalled from Salt Lake if Santana is unable to pitch next week.
"It hit about as square as a ball can hit someone," Scioscia said. "There's no structural damage. It could have been worse, but it still could be bad. We're optimistic, but won't know for a couple days."
With one out in the first inning, Michaels hit a shot through the middle that went for an infield single and knocked Santana to the ground. After a few minutes, the right-hander walked to the dugout with assistance and was replaced by Kevin Gregg.
Bootcheck is 4-2 with a 6.59 ERA in 33 games at Triple-A. In two games with the Angels earlier this season, he allowed two runs in two innings over two relief appearances.
Murphy batted .246 with one homer and six RBIs in 41 games with the Angels.

ouch! hope it's only a bad bruise! it's bad enough to get whacked by a line drive but how the heck does he take the loss in this - he threw 1/3 inning, gave up 1 run - his relief gives up 13 total runs and his team scores 2 runs to lose 14-2 and HE gets the loss?????? gotta make it hurt worse!
