Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Radiohead and Franz Ferdinand at Sziget Festival

Sziget Festival is one of Europe’s major musical and cultural events. The 14th edition is being held on the Obudai Island, in Budapest, August 9-16. Taking the five large stages – Main Stage, Pannon World Music Stage, WAN2 Stage, HammerWorld Stage and Party Arena – and the smaller stages to keep the specific spirit of the Sziget Festival, 200 international artists of all musical genres, 500 Hungarian bands, DJs, theatre companies, acrobats, dancers, 200 programs per day in over 60 locations.
Romania’s presence at the festival is more visible than in previous years, with metal bands Taine and Altar to perform on August 12 and 15, and the bands in the program Roma Tent, Fanfare Savale, Giani Lincan & Gipsy Band, Magyarpalatkai Banda and Nagysarmasi Band. In short, two experienced bands of heavy metal and four lesser known groups of fiddler’s music.
Heading the bill of the Budapest-based festival, heavyweights Therapy, Franz Ferdinand (August 9), Ministry, Jovanotti (August 10), Guru & Jazzmatazz, Scissor Sisters (August 11), Radiohead (August 12), The Rasmus (August 13), Placebo (August 14), Living Colour, Iggy Pop & The Stooges and Prodigy (August 15). The list of stars continues with Robert Plant & The Strange Sensation, Goran Bregovic, Manu Dibango, Cheb Mami, Natasha Atlas – World Music Stage, Yonderboi, Coldcut, The Orb, Gogol Bordello – Man 2 Stage, Roger Sanchez, Jay Cortz, Palotai, Carl Craig, Hernan Cattaneo (Party Arena), Craddle of Filth, Subscribe, Sick of It All, Gamma Ray, Fear Factory, Exploited and Morbid Angel – on the Hammerworld Stage. Musical offers aside, the festival’s program also includes cultural programs, along with comedy shows, street theatre, acrobatics, puppet theatre and ballet, of which the National Ballet of Marseille and Angika Dance Company. This being a festival that covers a wide range of events, Sziget also proposes a number of screen projections, the Magic Mirror location being dedicated to the films of celebrated Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. Organisers announced that the band Ill Nino, who cancelled their concert at Sziged and the entire European tour, will be replaced by Dutch group Green Lizard.
All of the 25,000 campsites have been booked, for EUR 125 apiece. Still, fans can purchase non-camping tickets. EUR 99, or daily tickets, EUR 24 each. Last year’s edition registered an all-time record, with 385,000 people attending the festival.
