Pop band pranks up for life on the road

To keep entertained on tour and driving through the southwest, Huntington, Calif.-based power pop band Hellogoodbye was neck-deep in a prank war with Ten Second Epic, a band from Canada.

"We filled their van with shredded newspaper, they put SpaghettiOs, ketchup and mustard on ours," said Hellogoodbye bassist Marcus Cole, 21.

Hellogoodbye won the prank war, thanks to their friend Joey, who was along for the tour. Joey bought Roman candles in New Mexico and unleashed them as the two vans were driving side by side on a Texas highway.

Cole said the balls inside the Roman candles didn't cause much damage, and the other band didn't get angry.

"They were mooning us," said Cole.

Hellogoodbye are performing all dates at this year's Vans Warped Tour and released its debut album, "Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!" on Tuesday. They have been signed to Drive-Thru Records for the past two years, the label that launched bands such as Dashboard Confessional and Something Corporate. Despite all of this, Hellogoodbye keeps everything in perspective.

"We're just dudes," said Cole, adding that the band members spends most of their time hanging out in their van. "We don't drink or anything."

Cole said the band usually tells people the name Hellogoodbye references the television show "Saved by the Bell." However, that's only partially true.

"It's also the idea of opportunities, coming and going," said Cole, adding that the name is also the name of a Beatles song. "We're just weirdos, I guess."
