on the verge: Persephone's Bees
If you saw the recent film Bewitched, you might remember a bewitching little ditty from the soundtrack called "City of Love." Meet the band behind that tune: Oakland, California's Persephone's Bees.
Fronted by Russian-born singer-songwriter Angelina Moysov, these Bees are garnering some buzz for their Eurochic update on classic pop-rock sounds, from '60s psychedelia to '70s glam to '80s new wave.
Listen: Nice Day
Read: An exclusive Q&A with Persephone's Bees

artist picks: Buckcherry
In a world full of bands trying to make rock music nicer and safer, Buckcherry stand apart.
Theirs is not music made a bunch of nice, safe guys. In fact, they'll probably beat the crap out of you and
steal your girlfriend, then leave her tied to the hotel bedposts while they stagger back to the tour bus.
What could have inspired such a bunch of tattooed hoodlums to start up a band? Founding Buckcherry members Josh Todd (vocals) and Keith Nelson (guitars)
shared with us a few of the albums that have inspired and influenced them from childhood to this day.
JOSH'S PICKS:
Minor Threat
Out of Step |
"This record was the first record I actually bought and the lyrics really meant a lot to me then...and over time when I revisit that record, it's timeless
and still has the same meaning to me now."
[Ed. Note: Out of Step is out of print, but all of its songs are featured on Minor Threat's Complete Discography collection.]
Prince
Purple Rain |
"I love this record becuase Prince had a way of expressing his sexuality through song that was cool and I was just getting to understand sex and
my sexuality at that time and that record really helped me get close to it, not to mention how many girls I got close to while it was playing."
Yaz
Upstairs at Eric's |
"Great overall record the songs are really well written but what really attracted me to this record was Alison Moyet's voice,
it is so rich and souful...she would always take me on a journey and I love her for that."
AC/DC
Back in Black |
"This record changed my life...it really revealed my destiny and made it clear that all I wanted to do was be the biggest piece of shit that life had to offer and get paid for it.
I drank a lot of beer and took a lot of acid listening to this record."
Rage Against the Machine
Rage Against the Machine |
"This band to this day is probably my favorite rock band...I have everything they ever recorded. They remind me of the reason why I loved
punk rock, they have conviction and passion and something to say. Their live show was not just a show, it was an experience, and I wish they were still making records today."
KEITH'S PICKS:
The Sex Pistols
Never Mind the Bollocks |
"This album changed alot of stuff, to say the least. Sonically it still stands up. Go watch The Filth and the Fury
and then re-listen to this record. The songs, the attitude, Rotten and Jonesy. Fuck YEAH!"
Aerosmith
Rocks |
"A great band hitting on all cylinders. This record never gets old, and I think I learned more guitar licks off of this than any other."
Howlin' Wolf
The Real Folk Blues |
"My first ever blues record that was given to me when I was 18 and just switched from drums to guitar. Howlin' had such an amazing life story,
and Hubert Sumlin could be the most overlooked guitar player on the planet."
Kiss
Destroyer |
"Howlin' Wolf made me wanna be a musician, KISS's Destroyer made me wanna be a rock star! At the time, Kiss was a big no-no in my house,
so I HAD to listen to it."
AC/DC
Powerage |
"A little looser and less perfect than Back in Black, this is a swift kick to the nuts if there ever was one.
The last time I listened to this, the sun was coming up after a very long night....the perfect soundtrack at the time."
Buckcherry's latest album, Fifteen,
is available now in the ARTISTdirect Store, as are all of Josh and Keith's picks. Click any of the album covers for more information.
