Death Cab for Cutie Announce Summer Tour Dates

Just when I thought that hitting up a few music fests and putting air in my bike tires were sufficient goals for the season, those ambitious dudes from Death Cab for Cutie come along and redefine what it means to make summer 'plans.' Gibbard and co. just announced their upcoming tour schedule, which begins in mid-June on a 700-acre farm in Tennessee (at Bonnaroo) then continues with two weeks of transatlantic headline dates, as well as a bunch of European festivals, including Denmark's legendary Roskilde Festival and Scotland's massive T in the Park fest.

From there, the quartet will hop over to the Land Down Under for more headline dates and the Splendour in the Grass Festival in Byron Bay. Back in the U.S., they'll take a week-long nap before playing Kuyahoga Festival on August 3 in Ohio, along with the Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, and the Hold Steady. Next up is Lollapalooza in Chicago and the Bleeding Kansas Arts & Music Fest in Lawrence, Kansas. That's a lot of festivals! Death Cab are lucky that they're rock stars, so they don't have to wait in line for the Porta Potty with the rest of us mortals.

DCFC will tour the western U.S. throughout the rest of August, along with the equally busy indie-pop pair Mates of State and another favorite band of "The O.C.", Spoon.

Earlier this month, the band showed up in Atlantic City for VH1 Classic's Decades Rock Live Elvis Costello tribute, contributing versions of "Kinder Murder", and "Accidents Will Happen", as well as a Costello/Ben Gibbard acoustic rendering of "I Will Follow You Into the Dark", which is also Death Cab's next single. Fiona Apple and Billie Joe Armstrong also make appearances on the show, which VH1 is planning to air later this summer.

In the meantime, hear Gibbard croon about young love, hand-holding, and freckles at the following DCFC shows:

The Streets to Run Marathon, Release New Single

Geezers need excitement! And for the Streets' Mike Skinner, apparently excitement comes in the form of running 26.2 miles through New York's five boroughs, alongside world-class pro runners in short shorts. The rapper announced in his official blog on Wednesday that, after speaking with Reebok, who sponsors him, he plans to run the New York Marathon in November. "I know it seems a bit long," he wrote, "but if people do it dressed as milk cartons, it can't be that hard, right?"

Right. And if Diddy can run the city, then the Streets can run the streets.

Skinner has yet to provide any details as to what his training program will involve, though perhaps by the time racing season rolls around, he'll have replaced table football, crack cocaine, and hard liquor with cross-training, energy bars, and vitamin water.

Last summer, Skinner joined Reebok's "I Am What I Am" campaign, following the likes of Jay-Z, 50-Cent, and Lucy Liu as the footwear company's new poster child. The rapper was a shoe-in for the campaign, a he has referenced the Reebok Classics brand in his music. Now he's trying to get a Rolls Royce sponsorship by posing next to a Rolls on his blog. That will definitely work.

When he's not logging miles or doing quad stretches, Skinner will be appearing on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on June 12, as well as playing the following summer tour dates.

Exclusive: Reunited Slits to Release New Music

The Return of the Giant Slits continues, as the recently reunited punky reggae legends have revealed that they plan to release their first new material in over two decades. For fans of punk, post-punk, reggae, dub, riot grrrl-- fuck, just about anything-- this is colossal news.

Original Slits Ari Up and Tessa Pollitt came together earlier this year to play a few shows in the UK; however, Up and Pollitt met in the studio last year to record new material. The Revenge of the Killer Slits EP will be out October 17 on SAF Records. It will contain the following songs:

01 Slits Tradition
02 Number One Enemy
03 Kill Them With Love

Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook and Adam & the Ants guitarist Marco Pirroni guest on "Number One Enemy", while Cook's daughter Holly, Pollitt's daughter Phoebe, Lauren Jones (daughter of the Clash's Mick Jones), and Miquita Oliver (British television presenter and daughter of Rip Rig & Panic singer Andrea Oliver) all contribute backing vocals to "Slits Tradition". "Number One Enemy" was recorded by Edwyn Collins (Orange Juice, "A Girl Like You") at his studio. Although Adrian Sherwood was previously reported as having been involved with the project, he does not appear to have contributed. (An Adrian Sherwood/Ari Up collaboration is in the works for the GSL label, however.) But goddamn, that's still some heavy-duty punk rock royalty right there.

The Slits are planning a U.S. tour this fall, to coincide with the CMJ Music Marathon in New York.

Check out the Slits website for footage from their UK shows, and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GET PSYCHED, PEOPLE!!!

Break out that cool moon/mirrorball graphic and get Dominique Leone on the horn, 'cause it's space disco time! Hans-Peter Lindstrøm, the Norwegian DJ/producer at the forefront of the current cosmic house scene, will release his debut solo album, It's a Feedelity Affair, October 23. The LP is a joint release between Smalltown Supersound and Lindstrøm's own Feedelity label.

Although Feedelity Affair is comprised of tracks previously released on 12", and contains no new material, it's still a big deal. For the first time, Lindstrøm classics like "Another Station" and "I Feel Space" (P4k's 22nd-favorite single of 2005, yo) are all gathered together on CD. DJ/producer Daniel Wang contributed the liner notes.

Twisted Nerve, Finders Keepers, Delay 68 Are B-Music

If two heads are better than one, can one head with three brains be better than two? What if the mega-head makes music inexpensive for foreign listeners? Ugh, our heads are spinning, so we'll lay it out easy here.

Brain number one is Twisted Nerve, the record label fronted by DJ/producer/graphic designer Andy Votel and Badly Drawn Boy Damon Gough. Numbers two and three are the labels Delay 68 (which Votel runs in conjunction with Cherry Red Records) and Finders Keepers, both UK-based reissue labels. Together, the three imprints, with the help of Votel-recruited DJ/designer Dominic Thomas, have developed an umbrella company, B-Music, which will put out music from all three in the U.S. So, soon we'll be able to buy stuff like the Prog Is Not a Four Letter Word, Folk Is Not a Four Letter Word, and Welsh Rare Beat compilations without paying astronomical import prices.

September 5 will see B-Music's first fruits: the recently unearthed psych gem Paint a Lady by Susan Christie, as well as Serge Gainsbourg collaborator Jean-Claude Vannier's L'Enfant Assassin des Mouches. According to B-Music's publicist, late 2006 will bring a "rhythm heavy femme-fronted Polish full-length" and "rare Turkish psych gems," as well as "wild guitar Krautrock jams" from Rick Tomlinson.

Further down the line, B-Music plans U.S. versions of the Four Letter Word comps and Welsh Rare Beat, both with new tracks, as well as Yamasuki's Le Monde Fabuleaux des Yamasuki ("another psych bizzaro soundtrack from the early seventies"). Records will come out at a rate of roughly two to three per month, with an emphasis on reissues of obscure classics and compilations.

To celebrate B-Music's American launch, the collective has put together a series of shows, set to take place in New York City tonight, tomorrow, and Saturday. B-Music's head honchos will spin records, and friends like Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals and Wendy Flower of Wendy & Bonnie will perform. The latter two lineups both have yet to announce their "very special guests," but we do know this:

Young People Hit the Road

Young People's Jarrett Silberman and Katie Eastburn used to bounce musical ideas off each other by sending tapes and CD-Rs cross-country. These "dark and muffled" (as Silberman describes them) home-recorded sounds grew into their latest full-length, All at Once, and now the bi-coastal art-pop duo is bouncing around North America together in support of the album, their first LP since Jeff Rosenberg's departure in 2004.

Making a few stops in the Midwest and Canada, Young People will spend most of the tour rocking their familiar coasts, performing in Silberman's home base of LA (including a gig at the Smell, the music venue/arts co-op that he helped found) and Eastburn's home sweet New York.

Exclusive: Josephine Foster Signs to Young God

Peanut butter and jelly, hands and gloves, Seals and Croft-- some things just fit. Add to that list the pairing of opera-trained folkie Josephine Foster and Young God Records. Foster has just signed to the respected imprint, owned and operated by ex-Swan and current Angel of Light Michael Gira, and once home to Devendra Banhart and Calla, among others.

Foster will begin recording her Young God debut, the as-of-yet untitled follow-up to this year's Lieder-iffic A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, June 7 in NYC. Helming this seaworthy effort as co-producers will be cap'n Foster herself and first-mate Gira. The trusty crew, scallywags every one of them: guitarist/bassist Brian Goodman, drummer Rusty Peterson, and bow-fiddler extraordinaire Jason Ajemian (Foster's Born Heller co-conspirator). Saxophonist Matt Bauder and organist Tracey Snyder hop on board for a leg of the voyage, as does a string trio on loan from Antony.

After viciously plundering harbor towns far and wide, Foster and co. will swap their booty for recording equipment and lay to tape such pirate-approved shanties as "Thimbleful of Milk" and "Lap of Your Lust". The sea-scourge won't end until the album drops in early 2007.

Until then, Miss Foster remains ashore, dutifully serenading various landlubbers on the final dates of her current tour. Avast ye mateys, walk tha plank, arrrrrr, etc.:

Shoplifting's Gear Shoplifted

As Milemarker's Al Burian once wrote, "Besides your own death, the other all-consuming fear of tour is having your gear stolen."

Last weekend (and for the second time in five years), Shoplifting's second-most all-consuming tour fear was realized. While their van was parked at 17th and Guerro in San Francisco, someone smashed a window and stole the following, according to a MySpace post from Devin Welch:

- Acoustic Control Corporation Model 150 Amp Head

- Fender 75 Combo Amp with Celestion Vintage 30 1X12" speaker, green silkcreened grillcloth, Fender logo covered with tape
- Case with pedals: Electro Harmonix Micro Synthesizer in battered condition, Moogerfooger - Ring Modulator, RAT distortion, Boss Stage Tuner, Danelectro Delay

- Personal CDs in a large black CD book and a brown-grey cloth CD book
- Faux tweed suitcase with books

Numbers' Dave Broekema and Eric Landmark, as well as Grey Daturas' Rob Mayson, have loaned Shoplifting enough equipment to finish their current tour. In the meantime, San Franciscans should keep their eyes peeled, and send any leads to yrshoplifting@yahoo.com.

José González, Jack Rose Featured on Acoustic Comp

With the recent controversy over whether or not "The Star-Spangled Banner" can be legally sung in Spanish, debate over the U.S. national anthem is perhaps more heated than ever. Maybe we all need to mellow out with some soothing "imaginational anthems," courtesy of New York-based Tompkins Square Records.

By the dawn's early light of June 6, the label will release a new acoustic guitar anthology, Imaginational Anthem Volume 2. Like 2005's Volume 1, this album features previously unreleased tracks from acoustic guitar greats of the 60s and 70s, along with new material from emerging folk talents.

Highlights of the anthology include a 1975 home recording by 12-string guitarist Fred Gerlach (he inspired Jimmy Page), a live recording (the first ever to be issued) by the legendary Robbie Basho, and tracks by Sharron Kraus, James Blackshaw, and José González.

Imagine the following tracks:

01 James Blackshaw - "River of Heaven"
02 Peter Lang - "Future Shot at the Rainbow"
03 José González - "Suggestions"
04 Jesse Sparhawk - "Light Cycle/Tetrahedra"
05 Michael Chapman - "Leaving the Apple"
06 Sean Smith - "What Blooms in Summer Dies in Winter"
07 Fred Gerlach - "Devil's Brew"
08 Christina Carter - "Ascend Mem"
09 Jack Rose - "Cross the North Fork II"
11 Sharron Kraus - "Looking for the Hermit's Cave"
12 Robbie Basho - "Kowaka D'Amour"

Some IA2 contributors will travel from sea to shining sea this month in promotion of the album. The tour-- presented by Tompkins Square and Arthur magazine-- features Sharron Kraus, James Blackshaw, and Sean Smith, with various special guests.

Be Your Own Pet Sign to Thurston Moore's Label, Tour

Sample lyrics from Be Your Own Pet's debut album:

"I want a kitty cat, my boyfriend wants a dog! We got into a fight, I drowned him in the bog!"

"I'm an independent motherfucker! And I'm here to take your money! I'm wicked rad and I'm here to steal away your virginity!"

"We all have holes in our socks! And Bad Brains totally rock!"

Imagine that screamed by a foxy blonde 18-year-old girl over trashy noise-punk played by three boys with pimples and braces. Yeah, the Nashville band pretty much sums up everything that rules about being a teenager. And they've been signed by indie rock's perpetual teenager, Thurston Moore, to his label, Ecstatic Peace. Be Your Own Pet's self-titled debut album comes out next Tuesday, June 6. They've previously released singles on XL and Rough Trade, as well as their own Infinity Cat imprint.

When Pitchfork spoke to Moore about Ecstatic Peace's distribution deal with Universal, he talked about signing Be Your Own Pet after a fierce bidding war. "I had come to them about a year or so ago, and there was some talk of me going down [to Nashville] and producing [their album], but I don't produce records-- I hate it," Moore said.

"I just flew down to Nashville and talked to them, and I kind of stated my case about how I could work with them and at least really look out for them as a band. They're so young, and my whole thing is being very cautious and aware of exploitation at that age within that industry. I really wanted to be a go-between there for them, and I think that was important for them... so they signed with Ecstatic Peace. It was exciting, but it was a little mind-boggling!"

As for Be Your Own Pet's frontwoman, Jemina Pearl, Moore said, "Jemina's great because she has a really professional vibe, but she's also sort of tame. She's this really striking young blond, rocks out like Iggy, and it's just like, 'WHOA.' And at the same time, she's very modest. She's very aware of that situation. She's like, 'We're four guys. We're four guys and we're a garage band and we have other things going on.' They're a garage band with all these garage moves but they love Television and more avant-garde kinds of things and it forms their music and makes them really special, I think."
