Tired of listening to the same old garbage on the radio? Although many may not know, UIC has its very own radio station. It is not much of a mystery because the fitting station name is entitled UIC Radio, which is run by our very own peers.

While the station has been around for some years now, it has recently increased in popularity. This is in due part to the ongoing success of a nightly show titled, "All Star Radio," which is the top featuring show of the station. It is ranked the undisputed number one college radio station in Chicago.

The station's main audience is geared toward an urban environment, which is a category UIC falls under.

The host of the show, Michael Muniz is a sophomore, who is also known as DJ Moondawg; he also doubles as the program director of the station.

Juggling his many hats of duty for the station, Moondawg explained that, "UIC radio is a free form version of commercial radio. It is all basically based around current hip-hop and R&B genres of music. But, we also showcase local and national celebrities within the shows."

"We have had many big names come to the station, such as Busta Rhymes, Method Man, Omarion, T-Pain, Ying Yang Twins, and Chicago natives such as Lupe Fiasco, Rhymefest, and Mikkey."

"All Star Radio" is on air Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Sundays 12 to 4 p.m.

The station does not have an FM dial, but there are other ways to tune in.

For those who are living in the dorms, the start of the school year offers a new incentive. The student residence halls will be broadcasting the shows on Channel 4.

However, the main broadcast system is over the Internet, which can be accessed through logging onto the official website www.uicradio.ws.

UIC radio offers an additional show, which is called Street and College Knowledge, which is known as "SN Radio." It is considered the premier source for the best underground/independent hip-hop and R&B. It is also a guide to Chicago's nightlife.

Moondawg's co-host of "All Star Radio" Kevin Mitchem, who is an alumnus and known as DJ Stretch 1, is the host of "SN radio" as well. During the show he lays out the premier party spots and clubs to go during the week. The show runs on Mondays from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Throughout the academic year, UIC Radio is an active part of campus programs. They host giveaways and sponsorships within their many events, which includes their biggest event, Midday Madness.

The event is held in the Inner Circle on every second and fourth Wednesday. A live DJ is spinning at the time, and there are giveaways for advance screenings of movie passes, freestyle battles, coupons to various restaurants and eateries.

UIC Radio is active in many other events and hopes to gain listenership as their broadcasting capabilities broaden.

At over 3,000 listeners already, the station is bound to gain popularity and with the new installation on Channel 4 into dorm rooms, DJs Moondawg and Stretch 1 are confident in their continued success in the radio world.
