TROPHY CLUB - A Frisco 12-year-old wowed hundreds of golfers by winning the ReMax Junior World Long Drive Championship Saturday.

In doing so, Chevy Stauffacher, 12, set a pair of world records with blasts of 311 and 321 yards.

The event started with 71 competitors, seven in the boys ages 10-12 age division, from around the country and Canada vying for the championship. The tournament featured two levels, a qualifying and championship round.

Stauffacher, an eighth-grade student at Pioneer, and his opponents were allowed three rounds of six drives. The qualifying scores were comprised of the best three drives out of the 18 shots. During each tee-shot, the golfers had to land the ball on a grid only 40 yards wide, or the shot was ruled a foul.

The Frisco resident's qualifying drives went for distances of 297, 298, and 321 yards, the latter was a world record.

The championship round was played out under the lights, and no one shined brighter than Stauffacher. He bested the second-place finisher (294 yards) by nearly 20 yards with a drive of 311 yards, a world record for the 10-12 age group.

He used a King Cobra 450cc 6-degree head with a 50-inch super-stiff shaft, a club used by only a few professional long drivers.

What made this championship special for Stauffacher's family is that he has only been playing golf since March of this year. In addition, he has only trained for the long drive competition since April.
