Air Canada, Delta flights clip wings taxiing on NYC runway

Sat Sep 9, 11:50 AM

An Air Canada plane clipped wings with a Delta flight as the planes taxied to a runway at LaGuardia airport in New York on Friday evening. No injuries were reported.

Air Canada Flight 723 was preparing for takeoff en route to Toronto with 103 passengers when it tangled with a Delta Airlines flight headed to Chicago with 68 passengers.

Damon Alexander, a passenger on the Air Canada flight, told WCBS-TV that the impact felt like "a jolt" but that the passengers remained calm.

The accident triggered a delay in air traffic at LaGuardia at 7:20 p.m. ET for about an hour.

Marc LaVorgna, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said there was minimal damage to the aircraft and that both planes returned to their gates.

The planes were taken out of service afterward so officials could investigate the incident and examine each aircraft for damage.

All the passengers were put on flights that left on Friday evening or early Saturday morning, officials with Air Canada and Delta told the Associated Press in New York.
