British Accents: Keane, Arctic Monkeys
by Dave Virr
| 09.13.2006
*Headed to the 2006 CMJ Music Marathon in NYC on Halloween weekend? Check out CMJ.com for a growing lineup of bands playing this year's festival. As I get information from the clubs it will be added to the NYC show listings. Some of the notable names include THE SHINS, THE KNIFE, BEN LEE, HOT CHIP, and more.
*KEANE have now cancelled their US tour indefinitely, as the frozen mudslide addiction has proven to require more than a week of rehab. RAZORLIGHT have subsequently cancelled all of their US dates, both with and without Keane.
*CHARLOTTE HATHERLEY, former ASH hearthrob (to me anyway) and guitarist, who left the band to pursue her budding solo career, is hard at work on the follow-up to "Grey Will Fade" and the record is expected sometime in early 2007.
*THE ORDINARY BOYS will release their third UK-only album on October 23, titled "How To Get Everything You Ever Wanted In Ten Easy Steps". The band are hoping that the long album title confuses a few uninformed ARCTIC MONKEYS buyers, apparently. It's criminal that this is the band's third album and they have no US deal. C'mon, I know there's label folks on this mailing list - somebody hurry up and sign these blokes!
*THE ARCTIC MONKEYS aren't going to pocket their 20,000 quid from winning the Mercury Prize, as they've all stated they'll give the award to an undisclosed charity. The proceeds from the million records they've sold, however, they've decided will be kept.
*Although it came out in late August, I've included RUBICKS "In Miniature" in this week's new releases because it flew in under the radar. BA has waited 4 years for this record, after happening across their amazing debut single "Midas". Britpop club DJ's and ST ETIENNE fans, have at it!
*It's a long way away, but start saving your cash for January 23, 2007 - it's the slated new release date for new albums by CLINIC, THE SHINS, and OF MONTREAL.
*Thanks to DJ Shawn of WMFO's "Paddy Whacked Radio" for the last-minute fill-in coverage of British Accents last Sunday. If you liked what you heard, check out his show on Fridays from 9-11am eastern time on WMFO. Check out the playlist here
*Let's all welcome LILY ALLEN to the KOOKS bandwagon - head here to download her entry to the now-crowded wagon.
*Check out Torr's Blog - Torr's Blog - to check out some old Britpop videos from the 1990's (via youtube) as well as (while they last) download links to the newly released PULP rarities.
*You can download the entire show on your iPod or iTunes (ala a podcast) by going to www.wmfo.org and clicking on British Accents "last show" on the schedule page.
