The White Stripes Announce Summer Tour

Jack and Meg, currently completing a Central and South American tour, have graced us with the first round of U.S. tour dates in support of their upcoming album Get Behind Me Satan. The tour will begin in San Diego at the end of July with a spot at Street Scene, before a couple weeks worth of West Coast shows, including a four-night engagement at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre. The tour will move east with multi-night stops in Minneapolis and Chicago.

More dates will be announced as they are confirmed. Before the tour begins, however, the White Stripes will go on a brief tour of Eastern Europe, with stops in Latvia and Slovenia.

The album will be released in the U.S. on June 7. The single, "Blue Orchid", has already been released. We here at Pitchfork HQ have been (un)fortunate enough to hear one of the B-sides, "Who's a Big Baby?" Let's just say that you'd do very well to stick to the A-side, and that there's a reason B-sides are left off of albums.

Iron & Wine Announce Short Tour

Now that the dust kicked up by the Woman King EP has settled, and the future dust of a collaboration with Calexico remains temporarily undisturbed, Sam Beam's yellowed folk vehicle Iron & Wine will be taking its new-found appreciation for a nice loud banjo on the road this June. And, really, you should do your best to catch him if you can, 'cause this may be your last chance until well after the fall release of that seven-song EP with Calexico on Overcoat Recordings.

The 14-date jaunt will kick off in Beam's native Florida-- Tallahassee, to be exact-- on June 8, and wind its way through a few of these United States, towing rootsters Band of Horses along in the opening slot. And, yes, Beam will be one of the many to play this year's surprisingly loaded Bonnaroo festival, which will also include sets by Joanna Newsom, Modest Mouse, My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, Secret Machines, Mouse on Mars, RjD2, the Frames, Brazilian Girls, and a shit-ton of bands that sound like Widespread Panic. Please, Sam, just promise us you'll stay away from the patchouli. Dates:

06-08 Tallahassee, FL - Beta Bar
06-09 New Orleans, LA - House of Blues
06-10 Oxford, MS - Proud Larry's

Black Mountain to Join Coldplay on tour

Well, they do say it's the quiet ones you have to watch out for. It must be true, because according to their Australian label, Low Transit Recordings, referential rockers Black Mountain have been asked to support none other than arena anthem giants Coldplay on most of that band's upcoming U.S./Canada tour. Somehow we can't picture the Coldplay boys trading in their designer-downtrodden clothes for authentic Jack Daniels sleeveless bacteria traps any time soon. Nor do we imagine Mr. Paltrow putting young daughter Apple to bed with a soothing Black Mountain lullaby of "the war machine keeps on rolling/ Evil minds and hearts of stone". But maybe that's just us.

While the pairing might seem odd at first blush, there's a simple explanation: Coldplay love the rawk. Allegedly, a Black Mountain tour of U.S. and Canada will be announced soon for September, but until that time North Americans will have to make do with the cavernous environs of Coldplay-size venues if they want to witness Black Mountain's continued campaign to rescue heavy rock from the scrap heap of history. Follow the dates:

06-20 Birmingham, England - Sunflower Lounge
06-21 Bristol, England - Thekla (with Jamie Lidell)
06-22 London, England - Underworld (with the Ponys)

In record news, the Vancouver quintet will re-release the trippy trance of "Druganaut" on a CD EP by Jagjaguwar this June 7. A 12" single for the track (taken from Black Mountain's self-titled debut) was originally released in November 2004 and included "Druganaut (Remix)" and "Buffalo Swan". These tracks will be collected on the EP along with "Bicycle Man" (from their split 7" single with Destroyer) and "No Satisfaction (Campfire Version)".

Killers Plan Lengthy "Thriller"-like Movie

If we've learned anything from Project Greenlight (or, to a lesser extent, "Britney & Kevin: Chaotic"), it's that making a horror film can be stupefyingly frustrating. The scripts suck, the fake blood's too syrupy, the zombie union won't work past 5 p.m., and Matt Damon won't stop hovering around like he's everybody's goddamn friend.

But Brandon Flowers and his Killers haven't made it this far by being quitters, are we right? According to a report on Billboard.com, the band plans to produce a 25-minute movie in the fashion of Michael Jackson's 1983 "Thriller" (their comparison, not ours). Drummer Ronnie Vannucci told Billboard, "We want to make a movie-- not so much a music video-- based on three songs to be played on MTV." The three songs are "Midnight Show" and "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" from the Killers' platinum debut, Hot Fuss, and an unreleased song "Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf"; they appear to tell the story of a murder committed by a jealous boyfriend and its aftermath.

The lads have already met with a slew of "established" Hollywood directors and actors for the project and hope to have the train wreck cleaned up by the end of this year, when they can use the flick to bridge the gap between Hot Fuss and their sophomore album, due out next spring.

Vannucci says the band will hit the studio again in November, with ten concrete tracks already worked out now. "I think we're trying to open up a bit," he said. "At least the kind of the mindset we're going in with is leaving some space. We kind of collectively think that a lot of stuff on Hot Fuss is a little too cluttered sounding."

As for the here and now, however, the Killers are on the last leg of a massive world tour, which will take them through August, including a few stops in Europe with U2. Those dates are these:

05-30 Detroit, MI - Fox Theater
05-31 Toronto, Ontario - Molson Amphitheater

Futureheads, Kasabian Head British Fest

Humble UK minstrels Kasabian are slated to headline the Jersey Live Festival, just another summer fest you won't be able to get to. It takes place on the English Channel Island on September 3. Joining Kasabian on the Positiv Main Stage will be fellow new-new wave revivalists the Bravery, the Futureheads, the Ordinary Boys, and the Black Velvets. For those who just can't get down to this guitar shit, Jersey Live will put aside a dance area that will see 2 Many DJs spinning, among others.

Kasabian, in addition to touring all summer, will be keeping busy on the Festival circuit. Besides Jersey Live, they've scheduled stops at the Carling Weekend Festival in Reading, the O2 Music Wireless Festival in London, T in the Park Festival in Kinross, Scotland, and the Summersonic Festival in Osaka and Tokyo. Here's hoping this go-round in the UK goes better for Kasabian than their last one. During an April 22 show at Glasgow's Carling Academy, guitarist Serge Pizzorno was cracked upside the head by a bottle flung from an audience member. How dare he?

Nas, Redman to "Rock the Bells"

Last year's second annual Rock the Bells Festival will go down in hip- hop lore as the last concert gathering of the Wu-Tang Clan in its entirety. 'Twas a world-class event, as the festival likes to bill itself, and this year's third annual incarnation boasts nearly as much legendary flava. Held in San Bernardino, Calif., on July 30, the festival will feature a none-too-frequent appearance by Nas, a duet of Ghostface and Raekwon performing songs from Only Built for Cuban Linx, Redman, Hieroglyphics, Sage Francis, and former Gang Starr lyricist Guru. Tickets are on sale now, and the NOS Center can only hold so many people, so while you're busy deciding whether or not to attend, we'll list off the rest of the acts to keep the pressure up.

There'll be several other California-bred artists, from both the South and North, including a Stones Throw showcase featuring M.E.D., Oh No (Madlib's brother), and Percee P (who, according to Stones Throw's website, is working on a Madlib-produced album tentatively titled Perseverance). Others from Cali include Q-Bert, Cut Chemist, Living Legends, Visionaries, and former Cypress Hill member DJ Muggs.

In between sets, special guest hosts will step to the mic and provide their own brand of entertainment. The hosts include B- Real, RZA, and Mr. Choc of Power 106 and Beat Junkies. What, not sold yet?? Well, consider this: you might end up on the big screen if you go.

That is, if the same thing happens to this festival as will be happening to the 2004 edition. According to Rock the Bells' PR, a documentary of the 2004 festival (including that last Wu performance) is near completion, with only finishing touches remaining. The plan is to trot Rock the Bells (The Documentary) out on the festival circuit and then actually release it theatrically, as widely as that bitch of a film market will allow. Finally, the film will be released on DVD, and if all goes well, everything will be available by the end of the year.

Keren Ann Announces Tour Plans

The Caesarian-born, part Dutch/Javanese/Russian/Israeli enigma known as Keren Ann Zeidel, or simply Keren Ann to music fiends, will finally have to get used to more spotlight time in North America as she is about to embark on a lengthy tour starting June 6 in Philadelphia. However, there should be little reason to doubt her coping skills-- after all, she's been nominated for numerous Victoires de la Musique awards (the French Grammy equivalent) and her gorgeous voice adorns two solo French albums, two solo (mostly) English releases, the Lady & Bird side project with Iceland's Bang Gang figurehead Bardi Johannson, and plenty of guest vocal appearances. Additionally, she has collaborated with France's talented Benjamin Biolay on many projects as well as legend Henri Salvador, co-writing 5 songs on his Chambre Avec Vue (Room With a View) "comeback" album. So yeah, don't expect stage fright to be much of a problem for this elegant pro.

Keren Ann will make an appearance on CBS' "Early Show" on June 4, followed by a healthy heap of North American dates (including a few perfectly paired with songbird Juana Molina). Then she will rendezvous back to her part-time Paris home for a few scattered dates:

Femi Kuti to Circle the Nation in July

So you read Pitchfork's recent Afrobeat feature, dutifully picked up Fela Kuti's Zombie, but haven't felt compelled to go back to it? Won't be able to make any of the June tour dates for Antibalas? Patience, friends; you'll have one more chance to spend a sweltering summer night shaking your rump to some politically-charged beats. That's right, Fela's biological and musical heir, Femi Kuti, has announced a full slate of July tour dates covering much of North America.

The tour, however, will not be tied down to the Kuti-approved genres of jazz, funk, and traditional African pop. Senegalese hip-hop act Daara J will open up for Femi on several of the later dates, while Mos Def, who worked with Femi on the latter's 2001 album Fight to Win, will make an appearance at the Hollywood Bowl on July 24. And remember, distance from the show is no excuse: Kuti lives in Nigeria, so the least you can do is drive a couple hundred miles to meet him. Put down that !!! disc and get moving:

07-06 Montreal, Quebec - Metropolis
07-07 Toronto, Ontario - Opera House
07-08 Ann Arbor, MI - Summer Festival
07-09 Chicago, IL - Metro
