Belle and Sebastian Reveal New Album Details

The Goalkeeper’s Revenge: complicated soccer maneuver, tawdry murder-mystery… or the name of Belle and Sebastian’s forthcoming album? Surprisingly, it’s the latter. It seems the Scottish popsters have abandoned their penchant for awkward, confusing album titles in favor of the straightforward for their new full-length, due in January 2006. RollingStone.com reports that Stuart Murdoch, Stevie Jackson, Sarah Martin, Bobby Kildea, Richard Colburn, Mick Cooke and Chris Geddes have been chillin’ in L.A.’s Sunset Sound studios with producer Tony Hoffer for the past few months, cooking up a disc that “takes inspiration from soul, pop and a little-known electronic four-piece from Manchester, England.” (Meaning New Order. Is that supposed to be a joke? I can’t tell.)

Murdoch described one song, “White Collar Boy,” to da Stone: "It's about an average Joe working in an office who has fallen in with a certain crowd that is slightly above him in social status. He finds it difficult to keep up financially, so he starts stealing. But he gets caught, and he has to do community service. Then, rather unlikely, they chain him up to a female. She's crazy, and she hits the guard over the head with a spade, and they jump on a passing barge. That's pretty much as far as the story goes." Sounds like Todd Solondz just got a plot for his next movie.

Other tracks feature titles like “Song for Sunshine,” “Sukie in the Graveyard,” “Another Sunny Day,” “Act of the Apostle Part I” and “Funny Little Frog.” Guess nobody’s going to stop calling them twee any time soon.

Rolling Stone also notes that Belle and Sebastian will be touring the U.S. next spring. For now, your only chance to see Stuart Murdoch shake his lil tush on the catwalk Stateside will be at the Across the Narrows festival in New York City in October. Or you can trek to London on September 25 to see the band perform their classic If You’re Feeling Sinister in its entirety as part of All Tomorrow’s Parties’ “Don’t Look Back” series. Or you can sit in your room and weep into your diary until the flowers bloom again.

This Is Just A Modern Rock Touring Schedule:

09-18 Perth, Scotland – Concert Hall *
09-25 London, England – The Barbican (Don’t Look Back) #
10-02 Brooklyn, NY – KeySpan Park (Across the Narrows Festival)

John Lydon Career Retrospective to Include New Song

From Sex Pistol to reality TV star, John Lydon has been many things over the years. Not that it's so hard to keep track-- the man likes to talk about himself-- but one could be forgiven for wanting a summary. That is presumably the market niche Lydon hopes to fill with The Best of British Ł1 Notes, which will collect a healthy dose of key tracks from throughout the former Johnny Rotten's sonic history.

The collection will be available in the UK October 3, in both 20-track single CD and 32-track, 2xCD versions, and will feature highlights from Lydon's near-30 year career fronting the Sex Pistols and Public Image Limited, including such classics as "Anarchy in the UK", "Death Disco", "God Save the Queen", and "Public Image". While both influential bands have seen multiple hits discs, this upcoming collection is the first to combine material from the two.

The intended draw for longtime fans is a new Lydon recording called "The Rabbit Song", which marks his first recorded material since 1997's Psycho's Path; the best-of also collects a few stray collaborations with Leftfield; Afrika Bambataa 12" remixes and less-known album tracks adorn the optional bonus disc. Le Tigre, Coup, Ted Leo to Play D.C. Anti-War Protest

It's either the next step in the long march of political pop or a bittersweet coda to the summer festival season. Or maybe both. On September 24, the anti-war coalition Operation: Ceasefire will bring a corking lineup of acts to the grounds of the Washington Monument in D.C. as part of four days of protests organized by United for Peace and Justice. The aim, of course, is to pressure the Bush administration to end the occupation of Iraq. "The soul of America weeps for the dead youth of this illegal and immoral war," says ever-eloquent participant Wayne Kramer, guitarist for the MC5. "It is time to step up and be heard."

Unlike many such events (like those thrown by the valiant Bands Against Bush and Concerts for Kerry movements), the Operaction: Ceasefire lineup is both diverse and high-quality. Hip-hop rebels the Coup and Head-Roc, Latino punks MacheTres, bouncy hardcore stalwarts Bouncing Souls, alt-country revolutionary Steve Earle, synth-pop feminists Le Tigre, good ol' boy Ted Leo and his Pharmacists, soul punks the Bellrays, and crusty scene vets Kramer and Jello Biafra will join event organizers Thievery Corporation (yes, downtempo electronica artists hate war, too) for some serious Bush-bashing.

The event costs no money to attend and is free of corporate sponsors, so any scratch you can throw their way will help (tax-deductible donations are accepted at the Operation: Ceasefire site). Organizers are still finalizing the schedule, but they expect around 10 hours of music. While the show may not bring the war to an immediate end, that top-to-bottom awesome lineup should at least prove that the good guys still have all the best tunes.

Belle & Sebastian, Go! Team Added to War Child Comp

The Brits love going overboard-- just look at their ferocious consumption of Crazy Frog ringtones. So last week, when we reported that the compilation Help: A Day in the Life, a benefit for the UK-based War Child charity which will be released in September, would feature Radiohead, Gorillaz, Manic Street Preachers, Bloc Party, Hard-Fi, Razorlight, the Coral, Elbow, Mylo, the Zutons, Maxďmo Park, and the Magic Numbers, did you think they'd stop at that measly lineup? Of course not! Since then, Belle & Sebastian, the Go! Team, Damien Rice, and Kaiser Chiefs have all been added, along with everybody's favorite ColdplaynotColdplay band, Keane, who are contributing a version of Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".

Once again, here's the comp's backstory: Back in September 1995, 20 acts took 24 hours to each record a new song for the original Help compilation for War Child. The album became the fastest-ever number-one on the British charts, and proceeds benefited victims of the war in the former Yugoslavia. To commemorate Help's 10th anniversary, they're doing the whole thing all over again. The songs will be recorded on September 8 and available on the War Child website for download the following day, making it the fastest album release of all time. A CD version you can buy in stores will follow soon after. Proceeds from the new Help will go toward feeding, healing, and educating children in war zones such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and Democratic Republic of the Congo. And us Americans can get back to our charity-album-induced inferiority complex.

The Rogers Sisters Sign to Too Pure

Brooklyn poppy no wave trio the Rogers Sisters (really "two Rogers sisters and a guy" if you want to get technical) have joined forces with Too Pure, home of nice folks like Stereolab, Electrelane, and Scout Niblett. Too Pure previously released the Rogers' Three Fingers mini-album in the UK (Troubleman Unlimited handled it in the U.S.), but now the partnership has come to our shores as well. On September 27, the newly, fully Pure Rogers Sisters will deliver the "Emotion Control" single, which will be followed by a full-length sometime in early 2006. Until then, the trio is touring Merry Olde England. That's more than you can say for yourself:

Celebration Sign to 4AD, Collaborate with TVOTR

4AD built its empire on the backs of pale kids crying mascara tears to the ethereal sounds of Dead Can Dance, the Cocteau Twins and the like. Now they've embraced the younger generation of theatrical mopers with the signing of Celebration, which is the trio of Katrina Ford, Sean Antanaitis, and David Bergander. If those people sound familiar, you were probably a fan of Jaks and/or Love Life, the moody goth-punk bands they used to be in. Celebration's self-titled debut, which will see the light of cold, dark night on October 11, was produced by TV on the Radio's David Sitek. All of Sitek's bandmates contributed vocals, and Celebration's Ford is slated to return the favor on the next TVOTR record. (She also wailed on several songs on their debut EP.)

Celebration (not to be confused with the Birthday Party or Black Celebration… oh what the hell, go ahead and confuse them) will be, uh, celebrating the release of their debut album with a tour supporting gloomy New Yorkers Calla in October. But first they'll be playing a one-off show this Saturday in Baltimore. Which happens to be their hometown. A-ha! So that's why they're so miserable!

Meet me at the cemetery gates:

Animal Collective to Release "Grass" Single

Rob "Giraffricorn"* Kleckner reports:
Hot 97s and Kiss FMs the world over are not excited about this news. But college radio and people like you are, so here's the scoop: The first single from Animal Collective's forthcoming album, Feels, is set to be released in the U.S. on October 18.

The single, "Grass", will be available in both 7" and CD, and will feature two additional tracks: "Must Be Treeman" and "Fickle Cycle". The track has lyrics, but I can't decipher them and neither can you. But you can hit me with your best shot beginning September 26 in the UK, and presumably September 27 in the States, because, you know, Americans are too busy coping with "the Mondays" to run down to the record store until Tuesday.

The band-- sorry, collective-- has also just announced three coastal U.S. tour dates for November. European dates are also being scheduled and when they are all confirmed, you'll be the first to know. But don't expect to hear any of the new songs at these shows, because Animal Collective are constantly moving forward with new material. If you attended their last tour, then you'll already be familiar with the new album when you hear it, provided your memories of the show aren't too damaged. Yes, that was a drug reference. Call your dealer:

11-20 New York, NY - Webster Hall
11-21 San Francisco, CA - Great American Music Hall
11-22 Los Angeles, CA - El Rey Theatre

Radiohead Start Blog, Track Progress of New LP

Here's a little internet history for ya: back in the day when weblogs were just diaries about whining about your breakup, online journals were almost entirely comprised of Radiohead lyrics and pictures of one's cat. Now that Radiohead has started their own blog, Dead Air Space, to document the creation of their new album, the internet world is about to see some closed loop, snake-eating-its-own-tail shit that could cause a second big internet bust, if not the destruction of the entire space-time continuum.

The band is recording in an as-yet-undisclosed location. In the first week of the blog's existence, all five bandmembers have already posted to it; except for Thom Yorke's entries, the posts consist largely of photographs. Sunday's entry from guitarist Ed O'Brien reads in part, "So here we are in studio recording and it feels right. its only day 4, its really early days but really good things are happening....lots of deconstructing and reassembling. we've been working on mornin' m 'lud and pigsee." We are informed elsewhere on the site that the second song O'Brien refers to, "Pigsee", may also be called "Pig's Ear". Beyond that, the blog contains scant reference to Radiohead's music, choosing to focus on photographs of a dog, a man in a crown making a rude gesture, and someone stroking a potted plant.

Arcade Fire, Annie, Goldfrapp to Head c/o Pop Festival

Cologne looks like the city to be in this week if you're Catholic and/or love electronic music. Mere days after Pope Benedict wrapped up World Youth Day 2005, Cologne will play host to the c/o Pop Festival, which starts tomorrow with a Goldfrapp performance and lasts through Sunday. What with "tomorrow" being so soon, you probably won't make it unless you're already in Central Europe, so allow us to torture you with some details.

The festival mixes concerts, conferences, and nightly parties all revolving around electronic music and the business thereof. Labels showcasing at c/o Pop include Komapakt, Areal, Bpitch Control, Trapez, Ware, and Firm. Are other types of music represented, you ask? Does the pope perform some sort of bodily function in the woods? Yes. On Friday and Saturday, two open-air shows will feature less abstruse rock and pop lineups, including the Go! Team, Hot Hot Heat, Dinosaur Jr., Arcade Fire, Annie, Hard-Fi, Maxďmo Park, and Saint Etienne.

Two million people are expected to make it to Cologne for the festival, which also includes something known as the Ringfest on Friday. According to the Nice City! Cologne tourist website, "The city of Cologne will change into a 2 km long concert area. Along the Ring streets and onto the squares of Neumarkt, Rudolfplatz, and Friesenplatz there are about 10 large stages built." The other nights, events take place in over 50 clubs around the city with shows involving (to name just a few) grime MC Tinchy Strider, Hrvatski, Ricardo Villalobos, and Burnt Friedman.

Fifth Cave In LP Out Next Month

Like a real cave-in, Massachusetts band Cave In are sudden, chaotic, and made of hard rock. Unlike a real cave-in, they've never killed any coal miners, or if they did, they didn't send us a press release about it. Cave In will drop their fifth album, Perfect Pitch Black, on September 15 via Hydra Head Records. Hydra Head were the band's label for its first three albums, before the members of Cave In took a little time off from being a metal band to sign to RCA and release a pop hardcore record. Relaxing! According to a live review from last week's Boston Phoenix, it looks like the new record sounds more like the Cave In fans know and love. Tracks:

01 Perfect Pitch Black
02 The World Is In Your Way
03 Off to Ruin
04 Trepanning
05 Paranormal
06 Down the Drain
07 Droned
08 Ataraxia
09 Tension in the Ranks
10 Screaming in Your Sleep

Cave In plan on hitting the road sometime in October to support their new release. Converge drummer Ben Koller, who replaced injured drummer JR Connors, will accompany the band for the fall tour, though according to his band's website, Converge is also hitting the road at about the same time. So either the bands will be touring together, or Koller's going to have to pull some Scooby Doo-type hijinx, possibly using a disguise, to make this happen. We suggest a fake mustache. Works every time.

Paul Weller Plans New Album, Tour

Ex-Jam frontman Paul Weller has had an increasingly prolific solo career over the past few years-- he's racked up four LPs, a B-sides compilation, and an entry in the UK's ongoing Under the Influence series since the new millennium broke. And while he's no Ryan Adams or anything, the Mod revivalist is already back with his latest studio LP, As Is Now, set for release on October 10 in the UK and October 18 in the U.S.

The record will be Weller's eighth studio LP as a solo artist, and first since 2004's Studio 150-- which featured covers of classic singer/songwriter-ish tracks (at least our other favorite Paul, Mr. Westerberg, has yet to pull that one). The first As Is Now single, "From The Floorboards Up", was made available via Apple's iTunes this July; the full album tracklist looks like this:

01 Blink and You'll Miss It
02 Paper Smile
03 Come On / Let's Go
04 Here's the Good News
05 The Start of Forever
06 Pan
07 All on a Misty Morning

09 I Wanna Make It Alright
10 Savages
