Aaron Carter has broken off his engagement to his older brother’s ex-girlfriend, his representative, Juliette Harris, confirmed.

The pop singer, 18, called off his engagement to 22-year-old actress Kari Ann Peniche just a week after he proposed onstage in Las Vegas, Harris said Monday.

Peniche is an ex-girlfriend of Carter’s 26-year-old brother, Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter. She’s also a former Miss Teen USA and former Playboy Playmate.

“I got caught up in the moment and proposed,” the younger Carter told Us Weekly magazine. “I then realized it was a hasty thing to do, and I am not ready for marriage quite yet.”

Both brothers will appear in the reality series “House of Carters,” which debuts Monday on E!, Comcast Channel 63.

Hubbub ‘flatters’ Oprah

Oprah Winfrey says her lawyers shouldn’t have gone after the man who is trying to promote her as a candidate for president. Not because she’s running, mind you.

“I feel flattered by it,” the talk-show host, 52, said Monday. “My lawyers overreacted, I think, by sending him a cease-and-desist order.”

It should have been handled in a phone call, said Winfrey, who said she’s thinking of calling Patrick Crowe of Kansas City, Mo. Crowe has been campaigning for years to urge Winfrey to run for president, setting up a Web site that has its own campaign song. Last month, Winfrey’s lawyers sent Crowe a letter demanding he remove her picture from his site. Her smiling face remains on www.oprah08.net.

Liza’s hubby’s suit tossed

A New York judge threw out a $10 million civil assault lawsuit Monday filed against Liza Minnelli by estranged husband David Gest, who claimed she beat him so badly during alcoholic rages that he had to be hospitalized.

State Supreme Court Justice Jane Solomon granted Minnelli’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit on grounds that Gest’s doctor had failed to rebut the actress-singer’s medical expert, who said Gest’s headaches were caused by a strain of herpes that causes shingles and not by beatings.

Gest’s lawyer, Lorraine Nadel, said she would appeal the ruling. She said that although Minnelli’s physician diagnosed Gest’s headaches as being caused by herpes zoster, Gest’s doctor said he tested negative for the virus.

McCartney ‘doing fine’

Paul McCartney, who appeared Monday at a news conference to launch his classical album, “Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart),” did not comment directly on his split from his second wife, Heather Mills McCartney.

But asked how he had been coping in recent months, McCartney said: “I’m doing fine, thank you. It’s OK. I’m enjoying music. ... It’s something that sustains me. So I’m enjoying it, finishing this project off and also the next one.”

McCartney said he started “Ecce Cor Meum” when his first wife, Linda, was alive. After she died in 1998, “it stalled me,” said the former Beatle, 64. “Ecce Cor Meum,” being released by EMI Classics, is the pop star’s fourth classical album.

U2 fans flock to signing

A select few fans of U2 found what they were looking for when they won the right to have copies of U2’s new book signed by all four band members. Interest in Saturday’s book signing by Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen proved so intense that organizers had to restrict access to 250 fans, who won tickets through a lottery on U2’s official Web site.

All 250 were waiting inside Eason’s bookshop, the biggest in Ireland, when the famous four arrived to sign copies of “U2byU2,” which went on sale Thursday, while 1,000 fans waited outside in the rain.

On Monday, U2 and Green Day performed at New Orleans’ Superdome, officially reopened after Hurricane Katrina.
