Forecast for Northeast Ohio: smooth

What did we do to deserve this? On Friday, smooth jazz veteran Kim Waters will be at Tangier in Akron and silky smooth crooner Kem will be at the Palace Theatre in Cleveland's Playhouse Square. Both are bound to give great shows.

Speaking of jazz, the University of Akron's JazzFest 2006: Voice of the Piano will be Monday through March 18. The event features free concerts, master classes, adjudication sessions and an Ebony-and-Ivory Cabaret Concert. The concert will be at E.J. Thomas Hall; other events will be in Guzzetta Hall.

There will be performances by jazz pianist Joe Augustine, UA's Bittle Jazz Artist-in-Residence, and guest pianists Bill Dobbins, professor of jazz studies and director of the Jazz Ensemble and Studio Orchestra at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.; and Dan Wall of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and the John Abercrombie Trio.

I absolutely love the Violent Femmes. They're going to be at House of Blues Cleveland tonight with Staggering Statistics. I had never heard of the 1980s post-punk group until one of its songs was featured in an episode of the TV show My So-Called Life (fitting since its lead singer has been called the elder statesman of teen angst).

More Lenten season fish dinners can be found in the Et Cetera list, which starts on page 14.
