David Bowie has confirmed reports that he will appear in an upcoming episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, playing a character called Lord Royal Highness in an episode slated to air in 2007.
"I've hit the Holy Grail of animation gigs," Bowie said in a posting on his website. "Yesterday I got to be a character on…tan-tara…SpongeBob SquarePants. Oh Yeah!! We, the family, are thrilled. Nothing else need to happen this year, well, this week, anyway."
The SpongeBob team surely made a good pitch to the pop icon, but the deal may have been sealed by Bowie's six-year-old daughter, Alexandria Zahra, who is reportedly a big fan. In the meantime, more grown-up audiences can catch Bowie playing the part of inventor Nikola Tesla in Christopher Nolan's film The Prestige, which opens on October 20th.
Bowie is preceded by many celebrity visitors to SpongeBob's underworld kingdom, including Karate Kid's Pat Morita, Saturday Night Live's Amy Poehler, and KROQ disc jockey Rodney Bingenheimer. The guest star bar was raised highest, however, by David Hasselhoff, who appeared as himself when SpongeBob made the leap to the silver screen.
