Hot Chip
Coming on Strong
Filter Grade: 89%
by Lesley Bargar
There are a few different types of sexy. There's Prince sexy, all hot and wet with a faint moustache and tight pants. And then there's Portishead sexy, all intimate and slow with a good beat and about 30 people. And then there's Kings of Convenience sexy, all harmonized and sweet and...foreign. Put all three together and you've got Hot Chip (and hopefully some paper towels on hand). Four British kids capturing the lyrical sex of Prince, the quiet, electro-beat sex of Portishead, and the white-boy harmonized sex of the Kings. Thanks to some killer, lush electronics and a refreshing (not to mention totally miraculous) lack of irony, Hot Chip pull off the white R&B nerd thing about 10,000 times better than Har Mar Superstar did. Seriously though, for a Brit to say the words "20-inch chrome rims" and "sex on a platter" with a tongue-free cheek is entirely impressive. For us to maintain a tongue-free anything after hearing it, however, is entirely unlikely.
