Tough Love Part 53
Thank you for reading!! :) #!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#! Chapter 53 Someone Like You As soon as I got in, Dad asked me how was the party. It was after 10:30. â??Fine. I had a bunch of fun. Iâ??m just tired now.â? I laughed a little. After giving Dad a brief summary, I went upstairs and showeredâ?¦slowly. I took my time with the hot water and I had gotten out briefly checking on the time. I actually wanted to relax on the couch, but it was already late and itâ??s a school night, and Michael might want to parlay on it, so I knew I should just chill out in my own bed. I was putting alcohol on my face when the phone rings. It rings about three times and no one still answers, so I groan and plop down on the bed. â??Hello?â? No answer. So I go downstairs to get something before I do the hard task of trying to sleep. The phone rings again. 11:24. â??Whoâ??s that?â? Dad asks. I think about it and decide to answer. â??Iâ??ll get it.â? Well I decided to answer HIM first. Then the phone. â??Hello?â? Pause. â??Hey.â? I know that voice. Sorta. â??Hey,â? I say a little cheerful. How long did it take for him to figure my number out? â??So whatâ??s up?â? I LOVE it when a guy asks me that. Thatâ??s their way of saying their interested in you, and thatâ??s the best youâ??re gonna get out of them. They wonâ??t be emotional, but the â??Whatâ??s up?â? line is like Heaven to your ears! â??Lyric?â? â??Oh nothing. I just got home sometime ago.â? â??I did around eleven. I hoped out the shower and called you.â? â??Oh,â? I say knowingly. â??Yeah, so what youâ??re doing now?â? â??Iâ??m just standing in the kitchen.â? â??Hungry?â? â??Yeah. I think I came in here to get some fruit or something. What about you?â? â??Iâ??m in my room. On my bed. Chatting with you. Took you by surprise, huh?â? â??That you called me?â? â??Yeah,â? he chuckles a little. â??You did,â? I say a little embarrassingly. â??But you must be tired, too. Youâ??re on your bed.â? â??No. I just like to talk on the phone on my bed. It helps me think.â? â??Oh,â? I say again. â??So why donâ??t you say more than that? Talk to me, girl. I ainâ??t gonna hurtâ??cha. I just wanna know what youâ??re about.â? â??Iâ??m about a lot, M.J.â? â??Then spill,â? he chuckles again. â??Itâ??s not that easy. What about you? You never said anything to me. Iâ??ve barely had a glance FROM you! So whatâ??s up?â? I look around and I see Michael looking at me wearily. I motion for him to turn back around and M.J. answers me. â??Sounds like you have it for me. Damn girl, I just want to get to know you. Yeah I know I never paid much attention to you, but I never noticed how pretty you were until the premiere with â??ole MJ. Are you gonna crucify me for it?â? I roll my eyes, but at the same time, I think his pleading is priceless, so I feel myself smile. Once againâ?¦another assertive boy. â??No, I wonâ??t.â? â??Goodâ?¦.â? He trails off. â??So, I guess Iâ??ll tell you about me.â? â??Okay,â? I say in a cute tone. â??Just wait a sec,â? I tell him. He says okay and I grab a juicy peach and ask Michael to hang up the phone once he sees me give him the thumbs up. He does, and I push my door up and turn my T.V. up a little louder. â??Go on,â? I tell M.J. He goes on a little about the sports he play and what heâ??s thinking about doing in the future for an actual career. â??Iâ??m good in math.â? â??Yeah, I know youâ??re already taking Calculus.â? â??Thatâ??s â??cause I doubled up last year with Math 2 and 3. And Iâ??m taking Math 4 right now. Not Calc.â? â??My b.â? â??Itâ??s okay. But I like it when you say that.â? â??What is it you DONâ??T like about me?â? â??Your guard.â? â??Guard?â? â??The guard you sorta have around me. But it wonâ??t be there always.â? â??Really?â? â??Really.â? Thereâ??s that longâ?¦awkwardâ?¦pause. Someone lightly knocks on the door. Itâ??s Dad and he pushes the door a little open some more. He raises his eyebrow. â??Wait a sec,â? I tell M.J. again. â??Do you know how late it is?â? I look at the time. 12:14 A.M. â??Yes.â? â??Make it quick, Lyr.â? â??Okay.â? I say. To be honest, Iâ??m a little ashamed he actually CAUGHT me up this late. He closes my door, and thatâ??s fine with me. I snatch my rag up from my bed and wipe under my arms. I do that when Iâ??m getting sweaty at home; just as long as Michael doesnâ??t see. â??Okay, Iâ??m back.â? I tell him. â??Thereâ??s no excuse now. So whatâ??s with you? Why you came back the second semester of last year? â??I would hear about you, but you seemed a little stuck-up. But I knew it was my own pride and glory. â??I donâ??t know how to approach girls like you. Yâ??all ainâ??t stupid.â? â??Well thank you,â? I say. â??Thereâ??s no arrogance there. I really mean it Lyric. Thatâ??s why you never really see me with ONE girl. Other girls say they have stuff to offer, so I just see what it is. But Iâ??m not that shallow. I know you like Donnie Cooper but Iâ??ve seen you go back and forth with him. Heâ??s has that rep around us guys. That shit again cute when itâ??s a girl like you. A good girl that seems so noble. I donâ??t like that. And excuse my language.â? I was silent for a few seconds, then I said, â??Well, I came back in March and living with my dad. Iâ??m fine.â? â??Heâ??s like a sergeant or captain right?â? â??The chief actually.â? â??Oh junk, you WERE on the newspaper cover. How long has heâ??s been doing that?â? â??It took him years to get there, so probably since I was born. I know since I was little.â? â??Oh. My dadâ??s a Baptist pastor.â? That I already knew. Patricia told me. â??How is that?â? â??Itâ??s cool. You know, gotta stay close to Godâ??do the right thing.â? But you act buff at school? â??So you must go to church every Sunday?â? â??Front row and center.â? â??Really?â? â??Naw, not really. Now I seat in the back. Iâ??m too old for that.â? â??Oh.â? â??Maybe you could see where I sit one of these Sundays.â? â??â?¦.Maybe,â? What was this, a date to CHURCH? Throughout this whole conversation, M.J. still hasnâ??t learned much about me. Another knock. â??Times up, sweetheart,â? Dad isnâ??t wearing a soft facial expression anymore. â??Okay.â? He walks back out, but I can tell heâ??s listening outside of my door. â??Hey, Iâ??ll have to talk later.â? I hear him stretch and he says, â??Yeah, itâ??s 1:24. Gotta let you get your beauty sleep. See you later.â? I go on and hang up. I look up at my T.V. and shiver. Did I just REALLY do this? Did I just talk to this guy I could categorize as a pretty boy? A boy with a soft face and who has a younger sister, which is apparent when they stand right next to each other. I guess he isnâ??t arrogant when itâ??s one-on-one, but what about when heâ??s with a group? What about then? It starts to rain out of nowhere, and with these troubling feelings, I grow angry and thatâ??s the mood that is kept on my pillow until I finally wake up the next morning. â??November 1st .â? Actually it was the first of November while I was up last night talking to M.J. on the phone. I decide to wear a green tank top and my jean jacket. With my hair sustaining itself, and with it being autumn, the colors looked good together. Dad is in the kitchen and when I see him again, I see the worried look, but he tells me I need to catch my bus. I told him Iâ??d rather ride the bus with my friends than be dropped off, despite the fact Iâ??ll have to wake up an hour earlier. â??November 1st baby! How is it for you?â? Pat asks. â??Great, you?â? â??Awesome.â? She says. I was laughing at the guys egging on jokes with a mixture of last nightâ??s experience, when I see M.J. walk towards the entrance for the breakfast line. I think I catch his eye, but he keeps walking straight. The same happens when I barely look at up at him once he had his food. He looks at me real quick, but if someone was stalking us, theyâ??d be the only ones to see that. I had a good day today, though I kept yearning for an opportunity to talk to M.J. Itâ??s like I want to talk with him and get the deal, but, shoot, I donâ??t know what I would wanna say to him. Iâ??m so glad he made it easier on me. Iâ??m usually not the first one to my locker, so Iâ??m the last one who leaves it at the end of the day. â??Hey.â? I looked over my shoulder. There he was. His teeth werenâ??t showing in a smile, but I had his attention. â??Hey.â? He shifts his bag a little on his shoulder. â??So, you wanna hang this weekend?â? I thought about it. Well, he didnâ??t specifically say a day. Michael said heâ??d was gonna go to the manâ??s house who works with Epic with his brothers, and I was going, too. Sunday I had church. â??Sorry M.J. I canâ??t.â? I thought about it and smiled a little. â??But donâ??t think Iâ??m stuck-up. I just have a few obligations this week.â? â??I swear you busy.â? He smiles after he lightly pushes my arm. I smiled. Then I remember how I was at Vacation Bible Study when I was eleven. Our teacher told the females to not stay with guys put their hands on you for the first time. I knew M.J. didnâ??t mean it that way, but that was still a thought. â??You are, too. Why else would you ask me for Sunday?â? â??Because thatâ??s Holy Day.â? He smiles. â??Naw, Iâ??ll be playing ball at the park Saturday if you want.â? He snaps his hand. â??Never mind, you busy.â? â??Yeah, but keep me posted.â? I say. â??â??Kay.â? He says. He surprises me when he leans over and wraps his right arm around me and gradually hugs me. â??See you?â? â??Def,â? I say it before I think. I mean, what the hayâ??he seems legit somewhat. â??Tâ??s not like Iâ??m labeled ANYONEâ??S girl. Iâ??m just seeing who the best companion is. Is that a crime? Not my fault love is tough. But as I think about it, I wonder why he would take his braids out. They looked fine to me. Now itâ??s in a puffy, low ponytail. #!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!#!
