Tough Love Part 60; Part 2
I got the idea about Patricia & Dean from Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's book "Alice On Her Way". A very tasty book :) Also, sorry fro bringing him up in the last part. I thought he was in it when I posted, but here goes.. ~~ Chapter 60; Part 2 Second & Third Day of Thanksgiving Break â??Ready to go?â? Dad asks. â??Oh, yeah. I am.â? I take the bottle with me too, but of course he doesnâ??t know it. I had a few more things to get today and Patricia was on the same pace, but she hadnâ??t started yet! So it was crucial for the BOTH of us to get out and do what we needed. Pat was lucky enough to drive her dadâ??s car so it was game for us. Weâ??d go to the mall first then the grocery store. â??I need to get Mom and Dad a gift. Maybe THATâ??LL make them happy.â? â??Okay.â? Patricia got her mom a scarf and her dad some cologne. We were leaving the grocery store when Patriciaâ??s name was called. We looked up and I think we both froze. The guy walks up to us. â??Hey, Pat.â? She looks down in a pained way. So he looks at me. â??Hi, Lyric.â? â??Hey Dean.â? And I look away too. â??Itâ??s nice to see you again. How have you been?â? he says to her. I donâ??t know why heâ??s acting phony because he wasnâ??t so nice to her this past spring. Dean Hugh Sullivan is a freshman in college, and when we were sophomores last year, they hooked up. Once word got out from nosy gossipers, Patricia still followed Dean, but he made it public that he didnâ??t want anything else to do with her, so when she was sitting on his lap, he got up and she nearly hit her face hitting the floor. She avoided him since. When she came back, I picked up my pace to keep up with her. There was tension until she sarcastically says, â??Gee, you mistakenly give a guy head, and youâ??re still being crucified for it. Look at this.â? I lean over and see that Dean gave her his number. Must be his dorm telephone number. â??He thinks I still want a good time with him? I was lucky enough to get Austin. I donâ??t NEED Dean now. Tuhh.â? She balls the number up and throws it out the window as she pulls off. â??I canâ??t tell Austin about this, but Iâ??ll tell Danielle and Sherry.â? Iâ??m sitting on my steps; looking at the number Dylan Cooper gave me and his bottle of pills. If I call from our phone, Dad can possibly track it on the bill, so I decided to walk to the local payphone a few blocks away. My hands is sweating as Iâ??m dialing his number and holding onto the phone. Wait, how do I know he may be at home? What if heâ??s working? Well itâ??s a payphone so thereâ??s not much to track. â??Hello?â? I swallow. â??He, hey, you left something.â? Pause. â??Is this who I think it is?â? â??Miss Pretty Lady, it is.â? I smile. â??Ohh, hi!â? â??Hey, you left something yesterday,â? I smack my tongue, â??and I need to return it to you.â? â??Yeah?â? â??Yeah, I need to.â? â??Well can you meet me somewhere? Iâ??m not feeling up to it today and itâ??ll be easier on me.â? Now Iâ??m impatient. â??WHERE?â? â??My apartment.â? When he hears me panic, he says â??Itâ??s not that kind of party. I guess I need what you found of mine, thatâ??s all.â? â??Okay, whatâ??s the address, I donâ??t have much longer.â? I take the bus and cautiously look around my surroundings before I knock on the door. Dylan Cooper opens the door and leers at me. â??Heey!â? â??Hey.â? â??Come in.â? He motions for me to. â??Wow,â? I nod my head. This is more like a condo, not a regular apartment! â??Bunch of glass donâ??t ya think?â? I ask. He looks around. â??Yeah.â? He smiles. â??Want something?â? â??Oh no, just to return the bottle of pills to you.â? â??WHAT pills?â? â??These,â? and I get them from my pocket. I hand it to him. â??Mmm. Well thanks.â? Heâ??s a bit casual about it! I had looked in the bottle and noticed they were the same ones he was taking that day we went to LongHorn, or whatever that steakhouse is called. â??Yeah, so whatâ??s with you? You have heart issues?â? â??Naw I ainâ??t got no heart problems.â? â??Thatâ??s not what the label say on the bottle.â? â??Donâ??t believe everything you read on a label, sweetheart. Donâ??t you know that?â? â??Nope because Iâ??m not dumb.â? The external parts of my ears are flaming now. â??Well can you stay for a little while? I fixed some salmon, for us.â? I got agitated. â??Honey, you canâ??t come all the way from across town, and donâ??t have some dinner with me and NOT listen to some Bob Dylan with me.â? He smiles. â??Butâ?¦â? I wanted to say â??But my father,â? but Dylan makes it easier on me. â??Donâ??t worry. Iâ??ll take you home at a reasonable time. Here, take off your jacket.â? He smoothly walks towards me, and I can smell the cologne. His fingers lightly brush my shoulders. â??Enjoy,â? he puts my plate in front of me. â??Whatâ??s in it?â? I point to the fish with my fork in a suspicious tone. â??Uh, fish? Trust me honey, if I wanted to get you, my scheme would be MUCH different. You would know.â? â??Oh,â? I say as I take the first slice. â??Arenâ??t you going to say anything?â? Dylan shoves another piece in his mouth. â??Like what?â? â??Like â??I really enjoy this dinner Dylanâ??.â? â??Want to watch some TV?â? â??No, I wanna go home.â? He thinks about it for a second. â??Well okay then, letâ??s go.â? What I noticed about Dylan Cooper was that heâ??s a gentle driver. â??Donâ??t you just love the black cushion?â? â??I do.â? I smile at him. Dylan stops two blocks away from my house. â??Soâ?¦whatâ??da ya say about the hockey game? Youâ??ll go?â? He sticks his hand out to me. I smile. â??Iâ??ll go.â? And I put my hand into his. â??Iâ??ll see you then, then, Sugarplum.â? I smile and roll my eyes as I get out. I guess if Dylan could be reliable then, he could be reliable later, right? I mean, I was in his personal condo! What more could I ask for? â??What have you done today, other than lounge?â? Dad asked. â??Well, remember I went grocery shopping with Patricia?â? â??You mustâ??ve been with her just then.â? I didnâ??t have to make up something. The phone rang. I was about to run to my room, but Dad answered, and I saw he looked worry immediately. He looks at me and I walk away. â??That was your mother.â? He quietly says while Iâ??m sitting on the couch. â??She wanted to know what we were doing for tomorrow.â? I donâ??t think I talked to her since I gave my sorry happy birthday. â??Oh....Did you tell her?â? â??Only that we were spending it with some of our friends we made and that was it. She donâ??t need to know the rest.â? Yeah, â??cause like she says, itâ??s none of her business. Todayâ??s Wednesday, meaning the house was going to be busy with preparations for tomorrow. I was showing Dad the turkey he told me to get. â??Lyric, this thing is tainted!â? â??Wha?â? I say as I look at the turkey. â??The expiration date isnâ??t old.â? â??Smell it!â? He turns it over and suddenly, itâ??s green-looking. â??Return it.â? â??The store is closed.â? â??Really Lyric?!â? Then he starts flying off his handle. Now, Clarence Swan KNOWS I donâ??t like being yelled out since Iâ??ve been yelled at so many personal times. â??I didnâ??t mean to!â? And while heâ??s still fussing, I luckily hear the door open. Must be Michael. So I look away in reference to the door. â??Lyric! DONâ??T you look away from me!â? I look back at him with a true glare. Where is this coming from? Michael walks in the kitchen, wide-eyed and confused. Dad keeps up his yelling about common sense. â??You acting JUST like your momma said. You act like you have NO common sense!â? That was too much for me! It brought back memories. â??Come on,â? I mumbled as I grabbed Michaelâ??s wrist. â??DONâ??T walk out on me! Let me finish!â? He tells me not to do that again. â??NOW you can leave!â? We turn away and I donâ??t think we can get to Michaelâ??s car. Both of us slam the door. He pulls out real fast and we leave. Heâ??s been driving for a few minutes, and we pull up at the back of a hotel parking lot. No one is really outside. He turns the music down. â??How could ANYONE talk to their child like that? Where did it steam from?â? I told him about the spoiling turkey. â??I told him it was the last one left but I had expected it. He acts like I canâ??t make a mistake on the small stuff, but he lets me leave with you.â? â??He just wants to calm down and not look at you.â? I look over at him. â??I know thatâ??s what Clarence is thinking.â? â??Yeah and Clarence have nerve!â? I slump forward and start to breathe harder. Then I start to blurt out swear words. â??You know? I just about HATE my parents. I feel like Iâ??ve been verbally abused. They act like theyâ??re just RIGHT! What CAN I do? Yâ??know, I donâ??t feel guilty for moving here anymore. Iâ??m actually happy. â??Iâ??m happy I met you.â? He looks down then back at me. â??Iâ??m happy I met you too, Lyric. But you donâ??t seem like you always are.â? I knew what he was getting at. â??Just because Iâ??m dating other boys donâ??t mean I donâ??t like you. Who knows? I might just be dating them so I can see if I like them first. And if I donâ??t, Iâ??ll date you next. Who knows?â? â??That would be nice.â? Michael grins. We sit there for a few minutes. â??Why do you say you feel youâ??re being verbally abused?â? I look at him and take a deep breath. Then I give Michael a variety amount of examples. I have a keen memory so I remember this kind of stuff. â??And now that Iâ??m thinking about it, there was this one time when a friend was having dinner at this hotel. I wasnâ??t too familiar with it though Iâ??ve been in there. Mom told me to go in there and see if it was the one we were looking for. Two other people were in there, and as I impatiently waited, I saw two clues that told me it was what I was looking for. RIGHT when I was going to ask the lady the name and where the restaurant was, I could see my mom at the hotel lobby door with a severe look on her face. I knew I couldnâ??t stand there, so I had to drop out of line like a fool because she was ready for me to hurry up. â??And when Mom is mad, she doesnâ??t like to reason with you. HER way is the RIGHT way. Since I couldnâ??t say anything, I glared at her and she threatened me. â??Thatâ??s why I glared at my dad, too. They think theyâ??re so big and bad, and tell me how to deal with these kinds of things, but as SOON as I use it on them, oh itâ??s different! So hypocritical. â??She said I had no common sense and I would just attend a college near her house â??cause I wouldnâ??t survive. â??But I know she went about it the wrong way. She has no patience. She even says she donâ??t. She fussed and cussed and I didnâ??t even want to walk in the restaurant, which was connected to the hotel, and we passed by it! â??But you know what I donâ??t get?â? â??What is it?â? â??She feels I shouldnâ??t dwell on those kinds of things, but she knows how I am. I donâ??t forget stuff and forgiving is hard for me to do. Sheâ??s a hell-raiser and she knows it. â??Itâ??s something that my grandma has, and she gets him from her dad, but I could never imagine Grandaddy Ralph being that way. I just donâ??t see it.â? I shake my head. â??Probably why quiet people STAY quiet. Like I say, if you continue to work a donkey, one day itâ??ll kick you, runaway, and never return.â? Michael shakes his head, too. â??You knowâ?¦Lyric. I-I know what you mean.â? â??How?â? I say as I look up at him. â??My father is the same way, I guess. Sorry for comparing him to your mom.â? â??Hey, if the shoe fits.â? â??Heâ??s just a selfish father. He toughens up his boys, but we donâ??t belong to anyone else BUT him. Joseph donâ??t like anyone interfering with the group; wives included.â? That surprised me. â??Is that why you arenâ??t married yet?â? â??No, I just havenâ??t found the right gal.â? â??Ohâ?¦.do you think youâ??ll find her?â? â??Yeah, but, I donâ??t always think about it. But anyways,â? Michael changes the subject, â??Iâ??m still working on finding some tickets to New York , but while youâ??re waiting, do you want to go to this carnival out of town the day after Thanksgiving?â? â??Yeah, Iâ??ll go.â? I lean my head on Michael and after a while, I have to open my eyes because he must be driving us home. â??Had a good time?â? Clarence asks. â??Splendid.â? Then I go for a shower and watch TV with Michael. ^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&^&& You like? Vote up :) (Aariyan.
