Fascination(PART14) by Candice
Dad was alone in his hospital room. He was sleeping and thank god he was stable. I found out he fell while climbing up the stairs because his feet got caught up with his untied shoelaces. I didnâ??t want to leave his side. â??Are you sure youâ??re alright here? Iâ??ll go get us some coffee.â? Michael said as he kissed me on the forehead. â??Yeah go ahead.â? I gave him a smile. I looked at dad and I gave him a peck on the cheek. I sat on the chair just right beside his bed. The nurse came in to check up on him. â??When will he be awake?â? I asked her. â??Heâ??ll be awake anytime now. We had to sedate him because of the operation.â? She said. â??What operation? Wait, how long has he been here?â? I asked some more. Michael came back and he was holding to cups of coffee in his hand. â??He was here since dawn. The neighbors were able to hear him shouting and they helped in bringing them here. We had to sedate him because of some stitches that had to be done and some injuries that had to be mended. Youâ??ll need to talk to the doctor, Excuse me, I still have other patients to tend to.â? She smiled at the both of us and hurriedly made her way out. â??I need to speak with his doctor Mike.â? I took the cup of coffee and placed it on the bedside table. â?Please watch him for me?â? Michael nodded and as I was about to go out to find the doctor, he came in. â??Hello. You must be the patientâ??s daughter?â? He said. â??Iâ??m Doctor Hunter. Itâ??s a pleasure to meet you both.â? He shook our hands. â??Pleas explain.â? I said as I went back to sit on the chair. Michael stood beside me and he was drinking his coffee. â??Youâ??re dad is alright heâ??s stable but Iâ??m sorry to say this.. Heâ??s going to be paralyzed forever and his right brain is dead.â? The doctor was looking down. â??What?!â? I stood up in shock. â??He wonâ??t be the same when he wakes up. It was a fatal fall and it damaged his spinal column so bad.â? He let out a sigh. â??He wouldnâ??t be the same?â? I sat down and covered my face with my hands. This was my entire fault. If only I was there with him, I might have been able to save him. Michael was hugging me. â??He has to stay for at least one more week. Have a good day.â? The doctor went out of the room immediately. I was crying now. My dad was paralyzed and for some reason he wonâ??t be the same anymore because half of his brain was already dead. I looked up and held Michaelâ??s hand. â??I want to stay here. You can go home Mike. I can take it from here.â? I looked down and gave dad a peck on the forehead. â??Iâ??m staying with you. Iâ??m not leaving you here. What you go through, I have to go through. Weâ??ll be on this together alright?â? He said. â??Would you still be in it with me even if I told you I want to cancel the wedding?â? I was embarrassed and scared to look at him. â??What? You donâ??t want to marry me anymore?!â? He seemed infuriated in a split second. He let go of my hand and he stood right in front of me. â??Iâ??m sorry Mike, but I donâ??t think I could do this. Dad needs me now and Iâ??m supposed to be taking care of him. Itâ??s not that I donâ??t want to marry you. I love you okay?â? I was trying my best to explain to him. He wasnâ??t saying anything. I tried to tell him again but he interrupted me. â??Look, if you donâ??t love me all you have to do is tell me okay? I donâ??t wanna force you into things. Iâ??m sorry.â? He went out without waiting for me to say another word. I wanted to run after him but I knew I needed to be with dad. He was my only family left. Hours laterâ?¦ Dad was still asleep and Michael was still nowhere to be found. He probably left me for good already. I was now crying over two things: dadâ??s situation and Michaelâ??s reaction. I didnâ??t know what to do but I was sure I had to take care of dad and take a break from â??me time.â? I ended up sleeping on the chair beside dadâ??s bed in the hospital room and being with my father slightly made me feel good and even though it was heartbreaking to see him in such a condition, I missed him so and nothing was going to stop me from being with him. The next dayâ?¦ I woke up because dad seemed to groan in pain. He must have felt the excruciating pain of the operation. I buzzed for the nurse and she came right on time to tend to him. I was surprised to see Michael standing by the door, looking at me. I stood up and approached him. â??I brought you some clothes and some books to readâ? He said with a gleaming smile. â??Iâ??m sorry. I know weâ??ve been planning for this wedding and- â? He interrupted my words with a kiss. â??No. Iâ??m supposed to be the one whoâ??s sorry. I was acting so immature earlier and I was so selfish. Itâ??s okay. If you donâ??t want the wedding at this time, I understand.â? I hugged him and gave him a smile. He did the same too.
